So, it seems the UK decided that, rather than ban VPN's, they've decided to demand mandatory online ID to use VPN's. Anybody paying attention should realize this could happen in the US or elsewhere. I wonder if they realize this will harm vulnerable people and journalists or if this is a goal? 1/

Well, in the UK the plan was that in order to access the VPN, you would need to enter a government ID or you couldn't use the service. The idea is that, since banning VPNs is too hard, they want to require the VPN itself to require mandatory ID.
Which is why you don't use a VPN headquartered in your own country.
That's a good point, but they could potentially require all VPN's in order to be available in your country in one way or another, to require a mandatory ID.
People in China have VPNs illegally lol they can't do shit if companies just don't comply
Yeah, but who's gonna refuse to comply with the UK, EU, and US? The only other nations that remain would also want mandatory online ID, so unless you're gonna set up shop on Mars, I can't see a way out of this short of robust political opposition to convince them of their errors.

Yes, the goal is to tie every online communication to a specific user. The key is to figure out some way to oppose this. Maybe we need to figure out how to find people abroad who share a common point of agreement who can raise hell without breaking the law.
This is just not true. You do not need id for vpns in the uk.
I think OP's original post is wrong but I think they are right to be concerned about the possibility, check out the article they linked to, which makes it clear that IDs for VPN is being discussed.
I hope you're right, but there's probably ways to force compliance, and if that doesn't work: They would move to ban them and probably impose some harsh penalties. The RESTRICT Act for example did propose banning TikTok and imposing a 20 year penalty for effectively using VPN's
Restrict was not in the uk though - that was a US thing.
That doesn't mean such a law can be passed over there... I've come to realized that one should always pay attention to odius legislation passed on other countries since these days, whatever happens over there, can come over here.

Articles can mislead. The gov has quite clearly stated that vpns are not going to have the same id checks as websites in the uk.
