Perhaps they are slightly more sophisticated but as a data scientist I sort of doubt it. Neural networks are nothing new they have been around since at least the 70s. The weren’t practical when theorized due to the lack of computing power and training data. These guys haven’t “invented” anything.

Moreover, having tried to use neural nets instead of a less “sophisticated” model usually results in lower predictive performance. The area where neural networks are really necessary is cases where the data needs to be encoded for example images or language.

However, at this point pre-trained encoding layers exist and image identification models can be trained very efficiently by only retraining the last few layers of the network using PyTorch. Training is the very costly part of the process and these LLMs are retrained all the time.

I agree. This is neither new nor revolutionary. It is, however, an evolution of something that came before. Like most discoveries. And it will cause a lot of further harm before it is allowed to implode.

Someone without formal training in physics is incapable of telling whether something is a potential breakthrough. If they looked at a whiteboard with equations at the edge of known physics, they wouldn't be able to understand any of it. You can't *do* theoretical physics without very advanced math.

Saying you're at a breakthrough because the concepts sound nice is meaningless. Unless ChatGTP is giving you equations and you're capable of evaluating those equations, you haven't done shit.

And you can't get anywhere with chatgpt on physics unless you can evaluate the results of the formulas, which for most of them requires actually having high precision high energy particle simulation software running on supercomputers (like what CERN does). The chatbot can't do deep enough logic

I'm 100% sure they're just talking high level popsci descriptions about physics theories with the bot. There's no way they're asking it to set up and help them evaluate actual calculations of actual physics. They think the bot already sits on the right answers, waiting for the right question.
