My god these guys are such spectacular morons gizmodo.com/billionaires...

Travis Kalanick, the founder of Uber who no longer works at the company, appeared on All-In to talk with hosts Jason Calacanis and Chamath Palihapitiya about the future of technology. When the topic turned to AI, Kalanick discussed how he uses xAI’s Grok, which went haywire last week, praising Adolf Hitler and advocating for a second Holocaust against Jews. “I’ll go down this thread with [Chat]GPT or Grok and I’ll start to get to the edge of what’s known in quantum physics and then I’m doing the equivalent of vibe coding, except it’s vibe physics,” Kalanick explained. “And we’re approaching what’s known. And I’m trying to poke and see if there’s breakthroughs to be had. And I’ve gotten pretty damn close to some interesting breakthroughs just doing that.”

Ah Well, Nevertheless @sdelorian.bsky.social

I just...it can't breakthrough anything. Even if someone wants to say it's just a tool (it isn't) they have to acknowledge all it does is regurgitate information it's been given. Which means nothing can be "discovered" it HAD to have been known for the AI to possess it.

Riiiight predictive typing on steroids is gonna change physics as we know it. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Don't get me wrong, there are AI-ish systems that do stuff (predicting protein folds for potential drug innovation, pattern-searching a high-res mammo looking for possible cancer) but Grok, OpenAI etc aren't those.

I won’t use the two letter term for these large models. Because that’s would be an insult to the notion of intelligence. These models are next word prediction models. Nothing more. People need to understand they can only combine old content into output. It comes with the old biases too.

There are many kinds of intelligence, and these models are not mere word predictors. As much as I hate this bubble and the tech bros trying to make it implode as fast as possible so they get their illegal billions faster, misrepresenting and underestimating the tech will put us in danger.

therealnbw.bsky.social @therealnbw.bsky.social

Also I agree there are many kinds of intelligence but ideas and words are not the same thing. Ideas and images are also both the same thing. Human (or animal) intelligence is doing pattern recognition at a level of abstraction these models can’t mom approach. Read Hinton’s opinion it’s good.

Perhaps they are slightly more sophisticated but as a data scientist I sort of doubt it. Neural networks are nothing new they have been around since at least the 70s. The weren’t practical when theorized due to the lack of computing power and training data. These guys haven’t “invented” anything.

jul 16, 2025, 2:35 pm • 5 0 • view
avatar
therealnbw.bsky.social @therealnbw.bsky.social

Moreover, having tried to use neural nets instead of a less “sophisticated” model usually results in lower predictive performance. The area where neural networks are really necessary is cases where the data needs to be encoded for example images or language.

jul 16, 2025, 2:35 pm • 3 0 • view
avatar
therealnbw.bsky.social @therealnbw.bsky.social

However, at this point pre-trained encoding layers exist and image identification models can be trained very efficiently by only retraining the last few layers of the network using PyTorch. Training is the very costly part of the process and these LLMs are retrained all the time.

jul 16, 2025, 2:35 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
Pink Freud @phroodloops.bsky.social

I agree. This is neither new nor revolutionary. It is, however, an evolution of something that came before. Like most discoveries. And it will cause a lot of further harm before it is allowed to implode.
