I’m sorry but I’m bucketing the Cracker Barrel crisis under “muh heritage.” The oil company wanted to sell more gas!

Founding: 1969-1980 Cracker Barrel was founded in 1969 by Dan Evins, a representative for Shell Oil, who developed the restaurant and gift store concept initially as a plan to improve gasoline sales. 51 Designed to resemble the traditional country store that he remembered from his childhood, with a name chosen to give it a Southern country theme, ® Cracker Barrel was intended to attract the interest of highway travelers. 51 The name comes from the barrels of soda crackers that could be found for sale in small-town stores across the American South in the early 1900s; people would stand around the barrels chatting and catching up, similar in purpose to contemporary office water coolers.

Always nice when a senator comes right out and thanks a sketchy special interest group for buying an election. But when crypto bros spend $40 million to put a literal used car salesman in the Senate, you've got to give them their props, I guess. (from Punchbowl News)

Tim Scott thanks crypto for toppling Brown This week, the chair of the Senate Banking Committee traveled to Jackson Hole, Wyo., to pay it forward. Speaking to an audience gathered for a crypto conference on Tuesday, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) thanked the sector for “getting rid” of former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio). “I gotta tell you — I mean, thank you to all of y’all for getting rid of Sherrod Brown,” Scott said. “He’s running again, by the way.” Remember that Scott is also the chair of the NRSC. Brown chaired the Banking Committee before losing to Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) in 2024. The crypto sector’s Fairshake super PAC network spent more than $40 million backing Moreno. Nine months later, Scott was frank about the role that crypto’s unprecedented campaign spending played in that race. “Literally, the industry put Bernie Moreno in the Senate, and he’s on the Banking Committee,” the South Carolina Republican said. Usually, lawmakers thank voters for their electoral victories. Case in point: Moreno spokesperson Reagan McCarthy said in a statement that Republicans defeated Brown “thanks to overwhelming grassroots support in all 88 counties and an incredible team of supporters and allies.” But things have changed in the years since the Supreme Court uncorked campaign spending limits for super PACs. Policy corner: Scott projected confidence on the Senate’s next crypto bill, which — like the GENIUS Act — will require a hearty number of Democrats to clear the chamber. “I believe that we’ll have between 12 and 18 Democrats, at least, open to voting for market structure, a far more complicated piece of legislation,” Scott said. – Brendan Pedersen

You might ask this question about E.J. Antoni: How did a guy with zero academic publications become Chief Economist at a "think tank" with a $100 million yearly budget? Because the Heritage Foundation is just a bunch of hacks, and that's who the right values and elevates.

Yes, what Trump is doing is authoritarian and unjustified. But it’s also WEAK, and so are all the namby-pamby Republicans supporting it, who are such wimps they won’t set foot in America’s dynamic cities. paulwaldman.substack.com/p/time-to-ca...

There has to be a statute of limitations, right? The Ford Foundation is pretty liberal, and they're using his money.

Trump sending in the Beergut Brigade to walk around DC looking for skulls they can crack had me thinking about this piece I wrote two years ago about "Try That In a Small Town" and its vision of rural people inflicting righteous violence on urbanites www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

This is the real lineage of “Try That in a Small Town.” And as befits the Trump era, the song takes the implicit and makes it explicit. Its violent revenge theme is common in conservative rhetoric, whether it’s gun advocates talking about how they need AR-15s to fend off home invaders or wage war on the government or Trump telling cheering crowds about his desire to inflict violence on liberals. (“I’d like to punch him in the face,” he said about a protester.) It’s why Kyle Rittenhouse is seen by conservatives not as a dumb kid who put himself in a dangerous situation with tragic results, but as a hero and a righteous avenger because he killed two people during civil unrest in Kenosha, Wis., in 2020. This is the dark side of the “small-town values” Republican politicians often advocate, which are supposed to be about things such as honesty, integrity and hard work. Don’t be fooled into thinking that “Try That in a Small Town” is anything but a wishful fantasy. It might sound as though it’s addressed to urbanites, but they’re not the real audience. It’s not a warning against city people coming to small towns; it’s a dream of how great it would be if they did. Then they could finally get what they deserve.

Here's another fun fact: putting aside a very brief one that happened under Carter, the last Democrat who had a recession start when he was in office was Harry Truman, while EVERY Republican president since then had at least one recession start under their tenure.

Every Republican president in the last 35 years has left office during or just after a recession so the Democrat who followed him had to clean up his mess; Trump is just getting started on it early
