There was an effort to rebrand anti vaxxers as vaccine skeptics a few years ago. The consensus was that by labeling them as skeptics they were more persuadable, while the other label merely hardened their viewpoints. No idea if this was true, but I'm pretty sure this is how we got here.
There were actually two different groups during COVID: anti-vaxxers and the vaccine hesitant, who were then called vaccine skeptics. The second group was mainly composed of individuals from communities that had been experimented on by the US government in the past.
For example, certain Black communities were apparently more hesitant when it came to the COVID vaccine due to the appalling history of government research on Black people in the US. It's not quite the same as Billy Bob, who thinks he'll get "the Autism" from a vaccine.
Even if this was true, I'm not sure that language should have been used to describe the leaders of this dangerous anti science movement. Grifter death merchants? Personally I didn't think calling the leaders simply antivax does enough to convey the impact of their grifting.
