I wonder if he would have stopped his philandering if he knew people would be denigrating him 400 years later on a worldwide forum. I kind of get the feeling he would just stop writing it down.

Maybe? He wanted people to read it, or he wouldn't have donated it to a library. I find his honesty about his warts his saving grace. (And is it philandering if the object of your desire depends on you for food, lodging, money, and a 'character' for your next job? Dammit, Sam.)
