You can have messenger w/o FB, I believe they have been separate for a couple of years. It will still see your FB contacts.

It will take people going first. I deleted my META accounts the day Trump became president. Make a post letting people know you're deleting and why, get all the contact details for people you want to stay in touch with, and then delete. It's the only thing that will send a message to tech companies.

Same! It looks like you can deactivate your main FB account and keep messenger. But you can't delete it, if you want to keep messenger.

I did that for a while, then deleted outright, giving them my email or phone number. Nobody bothered after I lost Messenger, so no loss.🫤

I've been thinking of that. But all my family in Germany uses to communicate is messenger and WhatsApp. Im not about to download WhatsApp so I've held on to messenger

I get that. It's sad though, really, that we rely on those apps to communicate with people. When I left FB it's like I evaporated because I guess it became "too much work" to bother keeping in touch with me in other ways.🙄 I even have an art account here that I mentioned, but no one cared to join.

I can confirm, I deactivated my Facebook in 2020 and kept messenger to retain my contacts.

Sorry to say it, but these are the kinds of excuses that keep META afloat. There really is no good excuse for decent people to keep their accounts. The hard truth is that if you're on META platforms, they're making money from you, and you are subsequently financially supporting and enabling fascism.

Family and friends refusing to go elsewhere are what locks many people in FB/IG (me included). But what if everybody we cared about jumped ship here instead... alas, not feasible. Nor desirable, on second thought...

I left ten years ago, so most of the friends and family I care to talk to have since adjusted. Of course this also explains why I don't have many friends I guess. 🤔
