Every situation can be maliciously interpreted. I would say that Trump did what he did. You can call it pandering. I chose to call it tolerance. I think my interpretation is more realistic.

He was literally trying to be accepted and welcomed by Democrats and old money interests in NYC, the story of his whole life. Same reason he tried to buy an NFL team, was denied, and became antagonistic to the NFL ever since. He only fully became a Republican when Obama mocked him on stage.
