That's what my Dad did in WW II. Chief signalman, USN, USS Heywood. The original ANTIFA. Very cool cat.🐾🐾
That's the same uniform I wore. RCN (Royal Canadian Navy I didn't know the Heywood, probably gone post-war. I did spend time on active USS in the early 70s. I went on USS Julius A Fueher (sp?) for 6 days to see what their conditions were like. They weren't as good as ours! Is your father alive?
And a very honorable uniform, too. - - . - - - - - - - . . . - - - - - . - . - . -
Good work if you can find it ;P
USS Heywood was a troop/attack transport. Five Battle Stars before decommission. Dad went ashore with the First Marines, literally 83 years ago today, as the first rubber raft (The "Midnight Raid") ashore to start the Gudalcanal Campaign.
Correction: 7 Battle Stars for Heywood. My Dad was aboard during 5 of the missions that resulted in battle stars www.history.navy.mil/research/his...
No, he'd be 104 today - but he did live to a very ripe 96!
Seems like a full life.
Only 5'4", but the toughest guy I ever knew. The picture was for his 90th birthday in 2011.
