The thing about Covid is that, for a whole year, people & leaders were forced, by a real visible crisis, to listen to experts and try to do the right thing. And they absolutely hated it & never want to do it again.

Same thing can be said about Brexit but in reverse - everyone who voted Leave knows they screwed up and that Brexit is responsible for the current fucked up state of Britain but nobody will admit that Brexit was a mistake.
Speaking as a fully vaccinated scientist, part off the problem is that many of the people who grabbed at the opportunity to call themselves "experts" and take advantage of that crisis to gain authority turned out to be neither expert nor trustworthy. Science was pushed aside by medical politics.
It boggles my mind that the experts were villainized in the name of trying to save lives during an unprecedented health crisis.
Also, they absolutely bodged it and far too many people died. COVID has a case fatality rate of something like 5%. It's serious (and long COVID is bad), but if it had been anything like, say, smallpox or measles in a naive population, things would have been much, much worse.
(I think that CFR is in unvaccinated people but with decent medical care.)
Basically we got off lightly, in terms of what a novel virus could do. We might not get off so lightly next time. There's no reason to think there won't be a next time.
Imagine their outrage at having to listen to people who know what they’re talking about.
All this 'cause they hated a Black prez too.
