the thing about Magneto fandom is ultimately that people like Magneto almost entirely because he's militant and Xavier is (superficially) not.

Mystique sometimes has goals. Sometimes not. Quentin, meanwhile, is the sort of character where you could, if you were a determined and dumb of ass, try to Killmonger him into being a political firebrand rather than a pathetic loser.

Magneto's actual ideology is far less sympathetic than his ability to make a good speech about how his people have been wronged - because his actual ideology is, at best, that of militant Zionism. An armed camp rejecting community with the rest of the world, ready to do battle at a moment's notice.

Magneto, and mutants as a whole, never even had the opportunity to be part of the community of the rest of the world, so it hardly seems fair to blame him or them for rejecting that community when it is facilely offered as a “sorry for all the persecution, please don’t retaliate” olive branch.

as more reactive than earnest. Even in his most mustache-twirly monologues, I always got the impression that his mutant superiority rhetoric come more from a place of “we have to fight fire with fire” rather than a genuine belief in an inherent genetic human inferiority to mutants.
