This doesn't mean Schumer and Jeffries are great at their jobs, but I also don't think much will change the polling until Democrats win the House.

I do not believe most voters answering polls about Democratic leadership are glued to C-SPAN with opinions on Senate procedure. They're looking for a button that can reverse 2024.

I definitely think this is true, but I also think a lot of voters would only see Democrats as strong if they were actually able to stop the bad things from happening, not simply delay them. People say they want fighting, but what they really want is victory.

My point is that ultimately a larger Congress wouldn't really affect how much I'm represented one way or the other, I still have a single Congressperson who's likely either outvoted by more conservative areas or swayed by influential leadership.

If Western institutions are making assumptions that are incorrect or racist, or are ideologically driven, or are unaware of efficacious treatments, the correct answer is not an "alternate way of knowing," the current assumption was just wrong.
A penitent who is loud (@loudpenitent.bsky.social) reply parent
"Alternate ways of knowing" always came off to me as the most incredibly patronizing rhetorical beat, as of members of other cultures did not value formal training and efficacious practice. If professional institutions are racist in hiring, premise or practical functions, we can just say it openly.

I think looking for structural solutions here is understandable but misguided. Congress has not historically been a den of virtue or civic spirit, and there is no prior era of (small r) republican engagement to point to to ensure it could not yield a Trump.
A penitent who is loud (@loudpenitent.bsky.social) reply parent
Debatable. The legislative branch is decisively captured by Republicans bc of its bias towards rural land over population & their interests. It is if anything significantly more halting and hostile to progressive politics. A more vigorous Congress will not save us! It may just hurt us more!

I understand both sides, especially given that for many of our lifetimes the "checks and balances" have very frequently (& triumphantly, by Republicans) been used to hurt our interests or stymie our needs. Ultimately we're not really imo in a place where systems can be separated from capture.

Quite the reverse actually, Western countries did not, by and large, WANT a lot of the emigration to the Levant. The Brits in particular pretty overtly didn't want a lot of Jewish emigration, legally prohibited it for a while, and pretty openly hoped the Arabs would win the 48 war.

I will say that while the settlement of Israel by Zionist migrants was not directly tied to the Shoah, the Shoah absolutely escalated it because many of the survivors had nowhere safe to go and no desire to return to the homes where their neighbors had (and in many cases were still) murdered them.
