Worryingly still, China is stepping up in the global health funding stakes, easiest way to gain soft power, and it's fair to say their agenda isn't exactly the bastion of ethics...

Yep, they are happy to fill the soft power vacuum with their own agenda and their own form of racism and colonialism. As long as their help doesn't come with too many strings and infiltrations, then id rather see people get helped than not helped at all, though.
I guarantee you the next DG of the WHO after Tedros leaves will be Chinese, or if they buckle, American
I don't know why they'd pick an American at this time, and if the US makes it through this they will need all their health leaders rebuilding capability back home. I fully suspect the lingua franca will shift to Mandarin in the next 100 yrs if the US/UK/Commonwealth continues to cede ground.
You know what Trump is like. Pick an American, get yer money. Although that din't work out in his favour in the Vatican 😂
The US isn't part of the WHO anymore. So other than dangling a questionable bribe contingent on putting a handpicked American in to ruin the WHO, there's zero reason for the WHO to entertain a thing he has to say. And I hope they wouldn't fall for it from him (or JDV because real talk dude's dying)
I hope so, but they're pretty desperate right now, a lot of my clients are being let go in the name of restructuring
I know, but accepting a Trumpian pick just for funding would ensure the demolishment of it as a functioning health organization. You can look at what has happened to the CDC (and to some extent the FDA) in just months and know that's the goal of anyone they send these days.
I also just enjoy the irony that the term is lingua franca.
