I locked my credit files several years ago. It’s not the hard to do, the only issue is, if you want to apply for credit you have to unlock your report. But you can specify it be unlocked just long enough to approve the loans, then it automatically locks again.

No downside. The only thing is that you have to unfreeze before you apply for something that checks all three credit bureaus, even if it is for a soft check (not a hard inquiry). If you've had prior issues with credit theft (I did), then a credit freeze is a great option!

Notified by Credit Karma that a "hard inquiry" was made by Cap One. After a couple hours I finally had to file with the FCC. I had 2 of the 3 frozen. They got into Equifax. They applied for a CC. Trans union was difficult to remove the inquiry. Equifax took it off my report, no problem. FREEZE!

Freezing credit is a must. Keep credit cards down to a minimum, we have two, visa and Amex, no store cc. We discovered when you buy a car in cash from a dealer, they must run a credit check.

What? Why would they need to check if you have the money in hand? That’s just paying—no credit needed ?!

It was their policy most likely how they need to move the title of the property and/or their insurance requirements. We did a combo of credit card and check.

I think it has to do with the amount of cash. There is a limit of $10K on deposits before an investigation is launched. So if you pay more than $10K in cash, they'll check your credit to make sure you aren't laundering money

By in cash I meant that we didn’t take out a loan through the car. We had enough cash in the bank to cover a check and/or enough line of credit on cc to cover. Still had to unlock frozen credit. BTW, it was a used electric car (not a Tesla) with 3k miles. A deal!!
