4 generations of my family have attended Annunciation. My cousin Pat helped comfort 3 of the children who were shot this morning. Good people amongst so much evil and sadness.

Thankfully my son is out of school now. But I felt the same way you're feeling today. We're failing our kids with "thoughts and prayers". First constantly thinking about something, but doing nothing to fix the issue is stupid. And prayers alone do nothing. Politicians don't care about kids dying.

This is why I homeschool. Literally the only reason I have. I wish my daughter could have the same school experience I did but we didn't have school shootings back then. Columbine happened when I was in 7th grade. It's been non-stop since then.

Literally, this. There are secular options. Heck, ours is considered public school, so there is no chance of falling behind grade level standards. They have done nothing to protect our children, and then we get attacked for taking the steps we feel we have been forced into.

I served with the Canadian military in Afghanistan. I remember coming home thinking thank god we only had to worry about the kids walking to school and not facing what the kids in Afghanistan faced. It must be something similar in the US which is unfortunate.

One of the saddest days of my National Park Service career was during a classroom visit when a surprise active shooter drill was held. A student helped me with their protocol. I asked her later if it scared her. She said “this is how it is for us, Ranger Doug.” A fifth grader.

My middle schooler explained the plan if a shooter broke into the classroom: The kids were to throw staplers or books or whatever they could find. At the gunman trying to murder them.

I was in a preschool Head Start class when an active shooter drill occurred. As I huddled with them on the floor, I started to cry, thinking this could not possibly be their reality. But then I thought “get it together. These kids can’t see you crying when the lights go back on.”

So I took a couple deep breaths, composed myself, and when we got the all clear, continued reading the story I had brought.

I was volunteering for my first one. I've been caught in 2. I cried each time.

40 years of teaching and I spent my last 7 years with active shooter training and drills. My very last year I learned how to “stop the bleed” and that’s how I ended my teaching career. 😡

They start by teaching the kindergartners about the “bad guys” at our elementary school. 5 year olds. ❤️‍🩹

Mine have to watch a video and my 3rd grader got the older kid video from what they watched in k-2. He came home asking why someone would point a gun at kids and proceeded to tell me how he would be the hero. He is 8. I am still pissed.

Imagine being an entire household that goes to a school everyday. 2 educators and three kids in school. It feels like we play Russian roulette everyday.
