apropos of nothing but did any body else kind of think about to getting into collecting something but just did not have the money or more importantly the space to store anything in quantity
apropos of nothing but did any body else kind of think about to getting into collecting something but just did not have the money or more importantly the space to store anything in quantity
We were lugging around a non trivial amount of comic books between houses for a while.
I still have a bunch. Can’t bring myself to let them go despite knowing they’re all essentially worthless. I MIGHT read them again right?! Right?!?!!
Whatever makes you happy is how I feel about things now.
honestly proud of myself for resisting buying another toy camera a couple weeks ago. I really really don't need another toy camera.
I collect many things and most bought for little. However, I have room & nothing that would kill another...except maybe a big butcher knife & an even larger, I do mean larger, butcher knife. And, I know how to use them.😉
I am at capacity for basses/guitars at 10. When I get a new one I have to get rid of an old one. But if I had more money and a band room, I could maybe get up to 20 before deciding that I had too many (to reasonably play and enjoy the nuance).
Having multiple guitars of any sort is allowed because that way you can have them in different tunings for different songs. Totally different instrument. You can have as many guitars as you want.
You're a bad influence.
I'm the BEST influence.
I'm running out of space for my Warhammer models.
That’s one of the reasons I collect cat photos and not little figurines and things. I have collected hundreds of them and they tuck away so nicely in albums.
That's also why I live in #SecondLife. Over two thousand dollars in clothing, houses, weird vehicles and toys after two decades and they only take up space on a server.
Seriously if you're going to have that many guns, you may as well go to Pandora to satisfy your gun collecting itch.
As someone who buys way too much stuff and is currently assisting with dealing with an elder parent whose main hobby was farm auctions, cat photos are the best.
think of all the actual cats if u had the space tho cats of yore
It would be like a CO mortuary darth.
People see houses like this and say "omg we could have the most epic parties there". I see them and think "omg I could foster so many cats there."
SO many cats!
ngl my first thought is "omg i could plan the most elaborate murder mysteries there"
Books & cats
Booksncatsnbooksncats books and cats and books and cats
So many kids could drown in that pool, which cannot remotely be gated off from the house.
"OMG, we could tax the shit out of the people who are buying such places and fund so many cat-centric rescue facilities."
Not going to lie, I see houses like that and my mind immediately goes to guillotines.
I love browsing Zillow listings and planning how I'd junk the place up with my cats and their stuff.
YES!
I think, "nice pool, I should get rid of that ridiculous building so it doesn't block the sun."
I see them and want input from @mcmansionhell.bsky.social
😂 Please see the ALT text for what I think about houses like this.
Alt text on point
You totally should be a realtor. You have a gift at creating descriptions.🤣
And I look at them and think “Dear God, so many rooms to keep clean.”
My Beth @bethsager.bsky.social feels the same.
Looks like the Hampton house from Wolf of Wall Street
“Who’s going to clean this place?! Not me, that’s who!”
Books, plastic ponies, cats and dogs
All I think is “The architect should be hunted for sport.”
So many you'd need staff!
I think “why did they make those staircases and not waterslides?!”
The pool has so much potential…to be drained and converted into an enclosed outdoor play space!
"I bet the neighbors are too close"
I immediately think - this should be a place where 5 families live. How is that ONE HOUSE? The cat rescue idea is good, though.
But what goes unsaid is that the cats are having epic parties :)
When we adopted our cat, the nice lady who was fostering her was the wife of a clearly crazy-rich French billionaire. She'd been an accountant, married into money, and then filled their entire mansion with rescue cats. DOZENS OF 'EM. Every room, cats sprawling like they owned the place. Aspirational
She was a very sensible, no-nonsense, middle class English woman who'd happened to get insanely wealthy and simply proceeded to do the only reasonable thing. Her distracted billionaire husband's home office had seven stray cats draped over his desk. A truly outstanding use of money.
I used to catsit for some neighbors who had a relative who did that. She got wealthy and bought a mansion and adopted 12 cats. It's good to know a girl can achieve her dreams!
I mostly just think "ugh so many rooms to clean!"
Literally the only humans that make me feel a twang of jealousy are when a lady has a house dedicated to animals Like the lady in Japan who made a fancy resort for all her feral cats Or gremlin and calcifer mom who had an entire room just for her cats
I see them and think, "oh my god I could never clean this place"
😂🤣😂
I think "Oh my god we could house so many people here"
Take the Silwa-pill. You can fit 15 in a 320 sq f apartment!!!
They are well as memories.
Our limiting factor isn’t space, but my anaerobic endurance darth. There are only so many Chewy boxes of litter and food that I can lift each week without my heart exploding.
And all the poop boxes to go with them!
That is such a sweet idea, but I'm pretty sure all those cats are dead now.
I've never had cats, just dogs. But I have so much cat decor, tasteful and cute. Dog tchokes are so tacky. Most dog stuff is breed specific and I love scruffy mutts.
Small scruffy mutts are the best combination of dogs and cats.
I love it!
That is painfully you.
Also I want one really badly.
Coincidentally property tends to be very cheap in the gun nut neighborhoods.
That's like a new cars value worth of guns or a down payment on a new house for that mega pile sheesh. I feel a lot less bad about all my NASA Lego sets now.
I did not know Woody from Toy Story was packing so much heat
As a country, aMerica is morally and intellectually bankrupt. At least 40% of the country is uneducated, backward and racist. Our education system has failed to do its job largely because republicans who control the State Legislature in so many states refuse to fund education. Republicans are evil
The only things I have in multiples are running shoes, fleece zip-up jackets, and measuring cups. I don't even remember buying all these damn measuring cups.
My late wife started collecting Remint Japanese miniatures because she could display way more of them.
There are a nontrivial number of Americans who think it's important to live in a rural area in no small part because they can't afford a place in the city big enough to hold all the firearms they can't live without
That and they're desperately afraid of all the non right wing folks living in that city.
Yup. Children.
I'd like to have more Lego models floating around the house looking cool but alas, the real estate market is a nightmare
Same here. I'm already at the "where can I possibly fit more shelving?" stage of my Lego hobby.
I wasn’t trying to collect them, but I have so many shot glasses from my 20s that now mostly get used for small portions of sauces and dressings
shot glasses sound like the perfect mise en place containers emi the sweary cook!
I own a healthy amount of Funko Pops. I love them to death. But I ain't gonna put them on my driveway and take pictures of them. Also, I don't have to worry about them being use in a felony.
Same, but I own a lot of socks and have a good-sized Le Creuset collection. I could brain someone with the sauté pans, but that's about it
I collect pottery, cheaper and takes up less space. It would hurt is I threw one at you.
honestly collecting for the sake of collecting is very weird to me
Weirdly I’m way more scared of a guy with a single well cared for pistol than a goofy family with 8000 random guns. I feel like I could rob this entire family with a butter knife and they’d have no idea I was even there.
In my defense, darth, the little pieces of cardboard all fit neatly into a very stylish binder. And to be clear, by "stylish" I mean "bright pink".
Comic books. I don’t have the shelf space for as many as would like but also don’t want to be the person who has a ton of books just sitting in the garage in boxes not being used as intended. I compromise & buy individual issues digitally & physical collections if I enjoyed it & think I’ll re-read
I used to collect many types of things. I've now pared it down mostly to things that are actually useful. No more stuff requiring space and maintenance if it doesn't serve a purpose. Why make more work for myself?
I could do this on a smaller scale with mechanical keyboards.
i had four deadly mandolines just to slice potatoes and it was just too many deadly mandolines tbh i just did not have the kitchen space
I just donated 3 crockpots darth. I only ever used more than one at thanksgiving.
Even the most talented barely survive Vivaldi's Deadly Mandoline Concerto in C Positive.
but what if those mandolines were deadly from a distance
darth, I got a mandoline for christmas about 20 years ago and it is still in the box because I am afraid to open it and use it.
ed they really should ship with protective gloves those plastic guards they provide are useless in my opinion
the plastic guards are scary as well. i would use it all the time if it came with those chainmail gloves made for shark protection.
Mine has got the little holder you stab the food with and push down with a handle so your hand isn't near the blade when you swish it into paper thin slices. I've still nicked the shit out of myself cleaning it.
Oh you wash yours? You reckless thrill-seeker
I wanted to collect beautiful wooden and marble chess sets. I did not have thousands of dollars or display space.
@darthbluesky.bsky.social Now imagining a supervillain who has four mechanical tentacles tipped with deadly mandolines
I have mandolin gloves — safety first then potatoes
darth you actually need even more mandolins you have a mouth and groin that could be mandolining potatoes while your hands and feet do the same think of the potatoes
I just love you Chris. I’m gonna pass on this advice to my kiddo friend playing at C. This could change everything on the O line.
I’m a little concerned about what kind of plays your kid’s team is running
Okay, I just said oh god out loud. Sorry
I am thinking of mandolins on the O line and it is both beautiful and mind boggling
Chris a groin operated mandolin is some disturbing stuff
Who needs a mohel when you've got a groin-operated mandoline
not a moment of my life goes by chris without thinking of the potatoes tbh
The Roman Empire surely ate lots potatoes.
( i accidentally erased my original reply because i am a ding dong 🙃)
Look, when the world seems like all potatoes, everything looks like the job of a mandoline.
Chris, are you writing the next Final Destination?
[me, stuck in traffic behind the mandolin delivery truck] "This is the worst thing that's ever happened to me."
The only thing more dangerous than an AR-15 collection.
how many potatoes
♾️
I have the protective gloves and I’m still afraid of mandolines.
A mandoline that isn't deadly is worthless. The little guillotines, I love them.
darth there has been a mandoline in my house for 10+ years that I guess arrived with my husband, and I have been afraid to ever touch it because of your posts. I’m not kidding
wbtc get an armored glove!
Would the chainmail shellfish shucking gloves work? Two for one!
i use my deadly mandoline gloves for the occasional oyster shucking schmuck schumer!
Or for falconry?
For falconry it’s better to have soft leather gloves so the falcon’s delicate feets do not become chafed
This is good to know. I’m in full support of falcon foot care and comfort. ❤️
You joke and yet the CPSC is allowed to regulate mandolines.
I have a mandoline, but am too afraid to use it. I also have a 3/4 hp meat slicer, and it scares the shit out of me. I have to use it to slice bacon, though. 😬
That sounds like you could have auditioned for “Mystery Men”, tbh.
Him and Blue Rajah‽ Unbeatable.
Darth, a home with that many mandolines is like out of a horror movie. I have one (cause thin potatoes, yum!), but it gives me nightmares. My bumpy right thumb (owwweee) can attest to my horror! (I’m much more careful now ‘cause thin potatoes, yum!)
Mandolines are just behind guns as the most accidental hand held injury device I have seen in the ER. I am disabling comments.
RAAllen86 i have several protective kitchen gloves to use the deadly mandolines and still cut myself they cut tight thru the material on occasion also i tried an oven glove once when i was desperate and little blue dots of rubber just dotted the potato
Someday I will make a mandolin bard and keep people guessing as to whether it’s a musical instrument or a kitchen aid.
Perhaps oyster shucking gloves for the deadly mandolins?
This is why I buy cut-resistant gloves for ours. Working in restaurants (even FOH) for a dozen years gives you a LOT of respect for sharp-as-hell kitchen tools. (Also, mine is a Benriner, because I adore that I can remove the blade to sharpen it on a whetstone)
those fuckers are indiscriminate darth 🩸
all you need is the classic benriner, darth
i had the classic benriner and the jumbo benriner justin!
i have the now apparently out-of-print benriner by joyce chen model. i also have the fancy oxo but i rarely use it.
That’s San Francisco thinking. We have no storage space. Other areas have way more land and questionable ethics.
What if you attached them to a lazy susan that folds down from the ceiling?
It wasn’t exactly a storing-in-quantities issue, but I had the opportunity to buy an antique imported hand painted traditional Sicilian donkey cart from Palermo, here in Portland, for under $1k. And hand to Gritty the only thing that stopped me was having literally nowhere to keep it
(and the increasingly pained facial expressions of my spouse during the live online auction I guess)
My dad asked me if I really wanted to be an unpaid curator when I talked about collecting stuff.
No, my wife is the collector. I’m a minimalist.
Darth that's like every Lego collector ever.
My yarn for knitting.
But, I must say, yarn never killed anyone.
I can find a way… 😩🙏🏾
Same!
At first I was concerned about tariffs for yarn. On top of private equity buying up American yarn companies, raising prices and reducing quality. Then realized I had a stash and projects in great yarns that could be re-knit.
All my yarn is in storage at a family member’s house who I am no-contact with. 🤦🏽♀️
Been pretty hooked on this pokemon card vendor's YouTube channel for its wholesomeness but I was shocked at how expensive they get Couldn't find an example rn but I have seen on another channel where one traded for $2000+ youtube.com/shorts/6ur9b...
“Daddy, why can’t we afford college?”
The grill in the first picture always kills me. They could've forgone two of their guns for a grill that wasn't a travesty like that. God damn.
😹
The whole house and deck looks horrendous
I collect Planck length rulers
books... I gave crates to my library when I realized I'd never have the space the books were in the crates.... who donates crates?
They said I wasn't allowed to bring the Moai on the plane as a carry on.
How can they afford it?
those kids are like look at what could've been my college tuition
I moved out of collecting comics and into vintage movie posters and original comic art which soon introduced their own storage (and cost!) issues
I am generally very resistive to buying things, especially given the lack of space, but one thing I cannot hold back on is sufficiently retro technical/nerdy CS books. A 1960s pamphlet on microchip circuit design? Sold! A 1992 guide to browsing the internet? Don’t mind if I do!
@darthbluesky.bsky.social "I was going to get into Pokémon card collecting but it was too expensive so now I own 30 assault rifles." - someone probably
These people put Imelda Marcos to shame.
Bottom right: woody from toy story got really radicalised, didn't he?
Lego. Would love to have a room just full of Lego, neatly arranged on the wall, where I could just go free build.
I collect bullets, just to keep them away from those freaks in the pictures
yknow, as a little guy I used to wonder why my grandpa collected matchbooks, but now I’m older and wiser and that seems like the perfect sized collection commitment.
Also it's an excuse to go out to places you've never been before.
i ended up installing a big ass wall unit for my camera gear but i have def started to collect something and then realized i just don’t like most of it? i don’t have a collector’s completionist soul. i only like certain weird or useful things. i even got rid of my decorative cameras idk
i put together a collection of purses in a rainbow of color (literally, a rainbow, on a shelf) then sold most of them again
If I didn't have kids I would have a lot more antique copper/tin smithing tools. The kids are pretty fun though.
Fortunately not having space has worked for not buying Legos. Unfortunately it has not worked for not buying comics
There are so many things that I’d want to collect. But yes, I don’t have any money nor do I have any room. Even if I had $ and space…guns would not be it!
Never really wanted a whole bunch of something that's just for display purposes
I have so many rocks 🪨😅
I started playing baseball again a few years ago and that led to redoing my own old glove, which led to hunting for cheap sweet old gloves to rehab, and now I’ve redone 19 I think? A few for friends. I had to stop looking for a bit, I need to move some before I can entertain any new ones.
Looks glorious, America's Game!
If there are a bunch of laces missing, is there a resource someplace with lacing patterns?
Not really patterns, but the various sections are common enough that the handful of people with good YouTube tutorials will probably cover what you need.
Do you have any recommendations on rehabbing gloves? My softball glove has seen better days (it was already a hand-me-down even before three summers of softball league) but I don't know what the best technique might be
I’ll preface this with a great big “it depends and it’s best to see some pictures first,” but, see this 👇🏼
Ah, you Understand.
oh, man, I can smell the neatsfoot oil. beautiful stuff. A2000 baby!
Honestly, Pecard is my conditioner of choice. Smells great, you can slather it on and just buff off the excess, and it adds a nice little bit of tack to the palm. I’ve got a 1959 A2000 that I need to get back to, found it for a song & while it’s seen a lot, it’s still got some life left in it.
Great to hear! I just bought some Pecard to refurbish the softball glove I used in the 80's and 90's.
Wow. Those are pristine! Have you ever considered doing a book about the process & also the history behind the gloves? I bet the search stories are great. Doing that kind of work must put you in a meditative state of mind. Or maybe it's just a lot of work...😂 Thx for sharing. They are gorgeous. 👍
That’s a bit beyond my scope, though I’m happy to chat process with anyone who wants to give it a go and point them in the right direction. There’s a good little book called Glove Stories that covers a lot of the history fairly well.
I will look for that book. Again though, those pics have given me a great start to the day. 🤠
Nice work. I like the Hank Aaron glove a lot
Beautiful work!
Well done.
That MacGregor G4T was my glove back in the day. I've still got it somewhere.
The one I found was already in such beautiful shape that I have barely used it. I gave it a quick condition and fresh lace, but not much else. It’s a wonderful glove, but I got to meet J.R. and so this one is essentially a shelf piece. I may try to find another to fix up for game use.
i have found my people 🙌
These are fantastic. I’ve only recently gotten into gloves bc my son is obsessed with baseball. The rehab job on these are great!
Thank you very much!
Yeah these are glorious. I might have to ask guidance on restoring an A2000 from the 80s. (Though I gotta admit I never liked that dual-hinge web.) Or I’ll wanna buy one if I get back into softball, ha.
If you decide to start down that path, I’m happy to chat. I wouldn’t have had the guts to try if someone hadn’t done the same for me. Basically 1. Remove all old lace (take lots of pics/notes!) 2. Sponge bath (warm water & Murphy’s) 3. Air dry 4. Condition + buff 5. New lace 6. Condition again
I find the lacing part the most daunting. But at some point I’ll try it.
There are a few good resources on YouTube for the various sections of the glove lacing. That and good notes/pictures goes a long way.
Besides getting a follow for having a cool hobby, I appreciate more sports / baseball in my feed. Also, that Tucker throw into Chapman’s helmet was the final straw for me watching the cubs game tonight.
Gotta love weird baseball.
lol, for sure! It was that moment where I knew “tonight’s not their night”
I love seeing old leather revitalized. The patina is so pretty and I just know these all feel super nice too.
My wife and I have a happy balance of sports cards Vs shoes. When she purchases a new pair of shoes, I buy a fresh box of sports cards.
Back when I worked in an office, I mounted some shelves on the back of my monitor and used them to display a complete collection of LEGO Star Wars Micro Fighters. But now I work from home and my monitor is mounted on the wall and the Micro Fighters are in storage.
Love how 'in storage' conjures up images of the final seen of Raiders of the Lost Ark but is likely a size 8 shoe box in this instance
It's two boxes, but yes, precisely. :D
"top. men.."
I collect records, but they don’t kill people.
I have high ceilings so i build up while trying to keep everything visible
I want to have more bikes and guitars, you know, things that make me happy and healthy and don’t involve fantasies of violence.
I’m sure some of them found the required storage space in their kids bedrooms. “Sorry son, but my third AR-15 knockoff is much more important than your budding comic book collection.”
I've always had space, and a lil money but the thought of dusting, tuning, and cleaning a "collection" was just a bridge too far...
My dad gathered together a LOT of history books (these are just the ones in his office). I’ve got quite a few, but most of them are in boxes, what I like to call ‘book safes’.
darth i have four ukuleles and i would like more but money and space say four is all i get
Vinyl. Sounds lovely and warm. Takes over your entire living space like some hipster weed and makes moving house like doing logistics for a Taylor Swift tour.
😭 it's so true
The amount of cute unique fun mugs that go unbought by me haunts me every time I make coffee, I deserve a wall not just 20 on a shelf haphazardly stacked.
My fellow cast iron enthusiasts need to start posing for pictures in this style. Gun nuts have nothing on out of control CA owners.
Yes, comic books. I realized this once I spent a bunch of money and space on comic books. Still doing it, consequences be damned.
darth I have nowhere to put all my lego sets but I keep collecting them anyway
Trying to convince my wife to let me get more board game shelf space…
That's why you get enough to build a Lego house to store all of your Lego inside of.
use Lego picatinny rail adapters to combine them with your gun storage
This is why my family no longer has a functioning dining room table.
I've always wanted to ask a lego collector: do you build it, then dissemble it and box it back up?
My solution is IKEA under-bed storage, but I plan to move in a couple of years; when I do, I will disassemble them and place each set in its own zip-top bag.
Darth this is why I cannot have four cats in a city rowhouse it is tragic
I have more guitars than I can usefully play in my band
Darth, my mom used to collect lottery scratchers … UNSCRATCHED. She would put them in frames and hang them on the walls. UN. SCRATCHED.
wat addie wat
It was torture wondering how much she might have won over the years. When she died she made sure not to leave the collection to me because she knew I’d scratch every last one just to know what she’d missed out on. Hundreds of tickets begging to be scratched. 😭
Just the memory of them not being scratched off would drive me up the wall
Darth if you give me an inch I will find an appropriate sized bookshelf and stick an itty bitty book or perhaps a game of some sort on it
Is Stuff I Like a good central theme to constitutes a collection? I dunno!
I collect cameras! My oldest currently is a Polaroid from about 1970ish but I've got something from basically every decade after. Mainly a mix of photography and TV/pro video cameras. You can find them for surprisingly cheap if you're patient but yes, space is a concern.
I haven't bought one for almost 2 years now tho. Priorities shifted and it got harder to justify dropping like $200 on a "cheap" vintage camera, even for one I planned to use. Plus my holy grail cameras cost like $6k or more *used and barely functional* so those are gonna have to remain pipe dreams.
Darth i have too many pokemon cards
Darth I have so much art and my walls are out of space and yet I still want more art 😩
I collect coins, but I can only afford the ones I get when I travel abroad.
I literally bought a second house for my TBR pile so 🤷
