Reminds me of English class where we were made to interpret meaning into a passage of a book that the author was actually on record saying "There is no hidden meaning, I just needed a way to move the story on"

Perhaps, but as a literal minded person I found the experience incredibly frustrating. My experience of reading in school really killed my love for books

And you have presumably been out of school for quite some time. Nothing stopping you from literally reading books now.
