Why are they driving down this route? The Lib Dems collapsed when they betrayed their base and aligned with the Tories just to get a sliver of power. It took them 15 years for them to regain any material relevence in the political scene.

Because the people calling the shots (notably Morgan McSweeney) are opposed to progress, human rights, democracy and equality. And because the rest of the Labour Party is too scared, or weak, to stop them.
