I have a “homeschooled” ex-evangelical friend who didn’t know how to read until he was eight, and only because a concerned neighbor stepped it.

Just saying the natural span for reading is from age 4 to 12. Often if they read later they are developing a strong vocabulary (in a literacy rich environment).
