the Y2K nostalgia we're seeing with gen z isn't strictly about aesthetics, more about reclamation of analog media (in this world of device streaming) and not being connected into the online mainframe 24/7. basically I think people just desperately want more visual interest with less digital fatigue
also the fashion pendulum will ALWAYS swing hard and fast in the cultural west but it's like we've reached a point where the tackiness of bedazzled jeans and pink flip phones with charms hanging off is preferable to kardashian beige and big tech hegemony. and I get it. I'm right there with y'all
