Many thanks for your responses. I think I also saw a max annual CRP payment of $50K per individual and that payments per acre average around $80, meaning sort of a cap on acreage in CRP at 625 acres per farmer ($50K/$80). Does that sound right?

Really, really depends on local payments. Corn Belt acres have higher CRP annual payments. Great Plains (wheat) areas much lower annual payments. So it really matters whether you're talking about Illinois or eastern Montana.

Bryce knows this way better than I do, but I remember a lot of rural landowners (who never planned to farm, held land for hunting, etc) had 100% in CRP. They’d always grouse when a county agent made them mow for thistle or something like that.

Very common, Jeff. CRP landowners do have maintenance to do (with government cost-share). And the hunter/habitat type is definitely a chunk of CRP landowners too. Good point.

The Minnesota farmers I used to talk to called it “farmin’ da Program” There are also various state programs that can top-up federal payments or have different qualifications
