Interesting that the farming-dependent rural counties have a lot of overlap with population loss counties.

Really, really depends on local payments. Corn Belt acres have higher CRP annual payments. Great Plains (wheat) areas much lower annual payments. So it really matters whether you're talking about Illinois or eastern Montana.

Very common, Jeff. CRP landowners do have maintenance to do (with government cost-share). And the hunter/habitat type is definitely a chunk of CRP landowners too. Good point.

Many farms have all of their program crop acres (USDA term for crop acres eligibles for government payments + crop insurance) in CRP. These are typically "retirement" farms. Other big row croppers have small portions in CRP that are typically wet and underperforming.

It doesn't bother me at all if all the DOGE-lovers out there join up with that Musk jerk's political crusade. Have a party together you job killers.

Yep. Walmart, Amazon, and McDonald's are the biggest welfare kings in our country. They should get a bill to repay the cost of their millions of workers on Medicaid and SNAP.

Absolutely agree with @thedanicook.bsky.social here. Dems gotta get out on the ground and listen instead of talk. Real people have powerful stories to tell. Hospitals. Lots of jobs will be lost. People will be without critical medical care. Hunger will soar. Spotlighting people should be the plan.

NEW: As the megabill takes effect, food banks will be the first to see increased need. And since the pandemic, they’ve already scaled up to meet higher demand. For @politico.com, I spoke to food bank leaders about how they’re preparing.

Dude. If you're still there you gotta hit up Busu. Great Japanese-sh food. It's takeout but so so so good. Noodles and pickles and miso and fried rice. Yum.

I hate Trump (and Ernst) too but the comments here don't give me hope that you all will be supporting Ernst's opponent in a race the Dems have to win to have any chance in the 2026 Senate races. Iowa had 3 of 4 House Dems in 2018. 2 of 4 2020. They're a more likely pickup than my home state (MO).

It's about her re-election bid in 2026. Trump is more popular than her in Iowa. And squeals are part of her "I grew up on a pig farm" schtick.

I can't believe that bunch of Ozark hillbillies and flatland Bootheelers from Missouri elected this Jason Smith clown.

Today, Trump visits the proposed site of #AlligatorAlcatraz -near 19 Seminole & Miccosukee tradit villages. Miccosukee homelands are not “an uninhabited wasteland for alligators & pythons” says tribal leadership. Miccosukees have protected the area “for generations” www.instagram.com/p/DLQq5WRPBr...

We are actually not done with parliamentarian rulings, folks. Things could still get tossed from or added to or changed in the bill. Voting is ongoing on the Big Beautiful Bill in the Senate, Republican leaders want it passed tonight, it has massive consequences, & the text is *not even complete*.

SNAP also makes a bigger market for farmers. More than $100 billion per year bigger. Farmers get about 16% of the consumer food dollar, so that's at least $16 billion per year in farm income due to SNAP spending.

Pretty much. The majority of farmers (cattle producers, homesteaders, local food veggie-fruit-livestock types) don't get any government payments other than occasional disaster or conservation assistance. It's only rowcroppers, and 10% of the largest growers get more than 70% of the govt payments.

Only about 15,000 farmers of all sizes nationwide grow these 3 crops. 15k out of 1.9 million farms nationwide.

Boosts farm subsidies to all program crops (cotton, rice, peanuts, corn, soy, and wheat), but the vast majority of benefit increases goes to those plantations. GOP couldn't get it done thru normal farm bill process, so they're doing it thru reconciliation. Big, big increase over regular spending.

Exactly. And also to increase immigration gestapo/ridiculous border wall funding + increase government payments to giant cotton, rice, and peanut plantations in the South.
