This. If a mechanic (even accidentally) cut someone's break lines while working on their car and then said "Oh no! I checked it all over! It's solid, everything works!", they'd be criminally accountable for the outcome. Don't see why Tesla shouldn't just because the scale is vastly bigger.

That's the part I hate. That someone can wash their hands of liability because they did something bad on a large scale. "Take responsibility for our actions? That could affect our share price! And then the politicians that are shareholders could lose money!"

I have read court cases where the damages were significantly reduced or just removed because "there were a large number of institutional investors (mutual funds) that could be impacted by this decision"

A lot of places in Europe tried that. Then we abolished it, because it creates an exploitable sub-class who have no means of gaining enough money to be considered 'valued members of society' due to the law, and no way of changing the law due to lack of money. And then they revolt.

Yeah, this is the eternal problem - no matter what system we create, there's always some group of pricks determined to create an exploitable sub-class within it. Their methods vary (when they have to), but they're always there, like a cancer. Just saying that system isn't immune either.
