In my experience they're decent at coming up with a regex given a set of criteria because it's just translating some rules to another format, and they're actually pretty good at that. But I don't know how good they are at, say, explaining a regex.

Nobody is good at explaining regex. Regex is awful, terrible, shouldn’t need to exist in this day and age. I will die upon this hill, until I actually get round to learning regex, at which time, I’ll sing its praises and recognise it for the thing that’s been a gaping black hole in my skill set…
