RTD is, in reality, three writers in a trenchcoat. Russell, who writes the camp funny stuff. Davies, who writes the dark emotional stuff. And the enigmatic T, a coked up welsh man who has lost his fucking mind. Love & Monsters is written by all three at varying intervals.
L&M will surprise you with an interesting idea and heartfelt moments. Then immediately follow it with the stupidest thing you've ever seen. It simultaneously ends with a very poignant speech on life, and also with Elton hinting at his love life with his girlfriend who is a concrete fucking slab.
I will say, L&M does FASCINATE me. Its good stuff is to be genuinely admired and its bad stuff is so questionable and mind-boggling. Its far more interesting to dissect and discuss compared to other series lowpoints like New Earth, Idiot’s Lantern or...Fear Her. Not looking forwards to that one.
It sure is weird watching an episode from 2006 have an episode take place in 2012 and 2012 was 13 years ago.
Things I liked about Fear Her: - The drawing gimmick - The opening TARDIS gag - Kel - ... The idea is sound but it simply isn't enough to fill an entire episode. It'd make a decent short trip or comic strip but not a full episode. Bless the actress who played Chloe cos none of its her fault.
I will say this; yes Fear Her is bad. But it isn't...aggressively bad. Compared to other bad DW episodes, I think it has more merit and is less unbearable to sit through. Boring? Yes. Mishandled? Yes. Bad? Yes. One of DW's worst ever? Debatable.
Say what you like about RTD, that man knows how to write a damn good cliffhanger. Next Time: The Bitch Fight of Canary Wharf (also Rose leaves or something idk)
While Doomsday doesn't quite hit the heights of the previous finale, its still damn good nonetheless. And it goes without saying, even if you don't click with Ten/Rose, that ending hits like a semitruck. "Rose Tyler-"
The Runaway Bride ain't perfect, but its probably the best Christmas special thus far. Donna Noble is just instantly iconic and that TARDIS chase is seared into my brain.
"That's not cybermen?" Those 3 words made little me skipped a beat on broadcast, and then the complete reveal of the cult of Skaro made me explode with screams and tears. Truly an amazing time to be a Doctor Who fan!
"You just took a council axe from a council van and you're using it to dig up a council road. I'M REPORTING YOU TO THE COUNCIL!"
Could they like, not just have Ursula not be turned into a slab? You could still do the same story for the most part. L&M is really good (with a few nitpicks) up until the reveal of the Abzorbaloff, then it just falls flat.
