I am attempting to make this today, from the Southern Cookbook of Fine Old Recipes (1935), and it will be either delicious or a disaster

Strawberry Jam Cake 1 cup butter cup sugar 1 cup strawberry jam 1/2 cup strong black coffee 1 teaspoon cinnamon 14 teaspoon cloves 3 eggs, separated 2 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon soda. dissolved in 4 tablespoons sour cream Cream butter well, add sugar gradually and beat well. Add jam and coffee to which spices have been added. Beat yolks of eggs and blend with first mixture. Sift flour and add alternately with sour cream in which soda has been dis. solved. Fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in layers in moderate oven (350 F.) 45 to 55 minutes. Ice with favorite icing.

Ok we had a few bumps in the road* but it's in the oven! *I thought I'd try allspice along with a nutmeg as a replacement for cinnamon, not realizing that allspice has cinnamon in it, but only wasted 1/2 cup coffee; it says bake in layers but I'm just doing one

Done! I took a tiny slice from the corner and it's pretty tasty. We're taking it to the in-laws later, so I didn't want to take more

Update: maybe allspice doesn't have cinnamon in it, but I'm fine with not having taken the risk, that shit makes my throat close up 😬
