Trying to learn to be smarter about social media. If something reprehensible floats across the feed from someone i don’t know and don’t follow - learning not to respond. Block, mute, or move on. Don’t waste the time. Search out the good folks instead.
You also will help to keep It off other people’s feeds if you don’t interact, thereby muting the voice. Let them wither into darkness alone and in silence.
Good practice, which I adopted as a prerequisite to joining social media. Responding to negativity and willful ignorance saps energy and it’s just pointlessly yelling into the void.
The way I'm trying to be smarter is to be more oblivious and less informed, to ignore more posts in general. My daily detailed knowledge of The Discourse does not accomplish anything. I sort of ignored the Gaetz saga, for example, and it's good I did because that would have been wasted energy.
Good point. Do I have to know every detail of it all? No. However I do admit politics has been a bit of an obsession since I was a teenager so….
I guess it beats having a gambling addiction.

I’m blocking more quickly, and I’m blocking people I see being assholes to other people. Don’t have patience to deal with jerks this time around.
I have come to the same conclusion.
We are taught about right and wrong when we are children. That doesn't mean I am right all of the time, what it means is that I know what wrong is. I, too, have no business engaging those people.
I'm trying to do the same while also trying not to he black or white about.

Twitter has/had us conditioned. I have no idea why I got sucked in by burner accounts. I tell my clients to disengage from toxicity. I did not always take my own advice.
Engagement also feeds the feed, filling it with more and worse.
I’ve found myself to be cautious about who I follow back. I’m not here to be followed. I’m here to follow like (or semi) minded people. There’s some sketchy people on all platforms and I’m too old for that nonsense.
This is the way, the only way.

I have blocked and muted a lot of folks who are positively gleeful about a man being openly murdered in broad daylight. Becoming the very thing they hate.

Knowing when to engage and when to evade is key to conserving energy and preserving sanity.
Can you imagine if online trolls had to look their friends and neighbors in the eye as they spewed cruelty and cynicism? Or if online posts took resources, like printing pamphlets? Would anyone bother with them? Would they even bother?
