As someone who grew up in the 80s, I can confirm. I wasn't even conscious of politics being a thing until the fall of the Berlin Wall and even then really didn't pay attention to politics until second or third year in University, by which point it was 2001. 1/2
So naturally I find out about things like the U.s supporting death squads and Guatemala and El Salvador as well as the AIDS crisis, etc. Even reading about music in the 1980s, especially with regards to Britain, was a good introduction to Thatcherism and its social effects. 2/2
