Carrying a long wave radio for hiking is indeed niche - none have been made for years and even then are relatively big to carry. DAB personal radios are however a thing e.g. Roberts Sports DAB 5.

In some parts of the country Radio 4 was also on medium wave but those transmitters were already switched off a year ago.

Booooo! The great thing about dial based analogue radio is that even when the signal is rubbish, you can just about hear what's being said. But with DAB if the signal is poor it just doesn't work at all. The ensh*tification continues!
