Everything Trump is doing is only guided by the approach of ‘let’s break it and see what happens’. It’s corporate vandalism deliberately ignoring that systems have developed over years in a certain way for good reason. But they don’t care about anything apart from appearing to be taking ‘action’.

Doesn’t affect the basics I mentioned. Pensions are meant to fund YOU in YOUR old age, not as mechanisms to transfer wealth tax free to your children.

Where will they clean / turn the trains around? You cannot get servicing vehicles onto the platform at Stratford? Is there somewhere in the St Pancras area they could move them to temporarily to clean?

Well the fair way to do it is a one off IHT charge on the asset transfer, then income tax on the interest generated by the residual asset thereafter. I fundamentally disagree that anyone should get unearned assets or income tax free just by virtue of their parents endeavours.

Profile picture Colin (@forestlights.bsky.social) reply parent

You need to distinguish between income derived from the asset and the asset itself. The secret is in the name! A capital pot can be used to generate income, or drawn down. The IHT is needed to just stop people drawing down to avoid tax.

Public education about the ‘state pension’ is terrible. You do not pay into ‘your’ pension pot through NI. NI is just another tax. All you are getting each qualifying year is an entitlement to a proportion of a future *benefit* which the government could and does change the criteria for.

Private pension contributions or their profits are not taxed. Your private pension contributions come out of your salary before tax.

But this is about the capital pot. That should not be possible to withdraw without IHT.

Many pensions have the ability to pass on a widows / widowers allowance to a single beneficiary in the event of the policy holders death. But I don’t see why it should be treated any different to the beneficiaries other income.

If you die it is not ‘your’ pension anymore. Let’s stop fudging the line between pensions and inheritance. If you have leftover private pension that can be passed on it becomes inheritance the moment you die, and unearned income for the beneficiaries.

It seems human nature that current reality is never good enough, and there is always something wrong that needs to be fixed by someone else. Childhood is always seen through rose coloured specs as none of us had to work or had the responsibilities we have now. We didn’t worry about strikes aged 16!

Trouble is people who believe conspiracy theories are indoctrinated to react badly when professionals try to correct them with facts. It’s the most important thing to get conspiracy theories to work - you need to get subscribers to reject all other evidence to the contrary with extreme prejudice.
