It's not really confined to the US. Corporate capture is widespread and I guess requires a fair bit of chaos before people 'choose' oligarchy over democracy.

It's no longer confined to the US because, for years, they have exported their dysfuntionality, and too many have embraced it. With trump, there has been a concerted effort from those in power in the US, to destabilize the UK and the EU. The United States has never been a healthy society.
