you know, ive seen Square Enix try with some of their sets in FFXIV, there is one based off the Final Fantasy II art that seems to work, but its pretty wild. I love some of this stuff though :)

that said, these days they tend to opt to the practical when showing armor. Heavy coats of mail for the body, plates for the immobile parts and different headgears depending on the situation. The best example is the crystarium set: gearsets.eorzeacollection.com/quest/shb/cr...
I'm a big fan of the like "GC Era" Fire Emblem stuff. Never even played those games, but they had a good mix of like... not REALISTIC armor, but GROUNDED armor, if that makes sense?? Like total 80/90s anime vibes still but very real feeling.
ooo totally, finding that balance is so fun. Like a diamond in the rough blending form and function.
