People say this, but the NYC Metropolitan area (below) is 180 miles East- West and 140 miles North- South. Just from a land perspective, to be the same size the LA metro area would have to include everything from Malibu to Tijuana.

They're both pretty dang big, LA covers more land area because of mountains but NYC is denser
