does that mean autism is purely a construct of some kind /gen
does that mean autism is purely a construct of some kind /gen
Well, there may be some physical attributes and actions that differ, like our aversion to looking people in the eyes. That was a huge one growing up, people assume you're a liar when it's just you don't like it. Humans did wipe out our previous species, and some seem too easily swayed by.....
....irrational hate based on someone being too (insert racial trait, ethnic trait, or anything deemed "Unusual" or "Weird" to the person in question) and getting violent for no reason. But for us, it feels like we have an Autism radar, and seek out other ND's to hang with.
like sensory sensitivity or sensory seeking could be one facet also increased interest in specific areas like special interests or hyperfixations
Yes! Fluctuating sensory perception with instances of hyper and/or hypo sensitivities and monotropism both seem to be core features. Also other interoceptive differences, including sometimes a deficit or dysfunction in intuitive perception/cognition
ofc constructs can still be real albeit abstract like money or time
I only ask if there is no overarching framework what gives us a coherent definition?
There is no *objective* determinant of being Autistic nor would there be possible to make one. The simplest thing to say is that if you are Autistic you are 100% Autistic but there is grey fuzzy regions at the boarder of being Autistic OR Allistic when you discuss edge cases.
my bone of contention is politicians and civil servants want to create artificial scarcity via gatekeeping so will create an arbitrary cut off point if we need anything outside of mutual aid networks or charity or own resources
so even if there is only self defined identity those in power will reject such notions because they would scare themselves shitless at any idea outside of neuronormative exists
basically foucault's notion of discourse and power they need to create a framework of control in order to draw boundaries around what they consider "normal" or conventional
You have changed the topic … it’s a complex one … Autism is a Neurotype that people are born with. It’s a Phenotype … based on many many genes and it’s hard to define … human beings don’t ever actually fit into Simple definitions with simple rules … not even sex is a binary …
ah sorry
The moment you start talking about Bureaucratic cataloging of people for use by infrastructure you are moving away from what is going on in the infinite complexity of a human and you are discussing the rules and constructs to support rigidly cataloging people.
ah I think rigid cataloguing is bad , if I haven't said otherwise
You are free to propose an alternative System and campaign for it to replace what exist.
Ah I tend to create frameworks or typology in my head for sociology but that’s not accurate , just a thing like making lists I do to self soothe uncertainty
Or used to draw diagrams or flow charts etc
ASD is a committee determined system to assess if an Autistic Individal has clinically significant challenges and should be cataloged as such for bureaucratic purposes. It’s a framework that is laid out that a diagnostician subjectively assesses along 96 permutations.
Various organizations and institutions can choose to use the ASD system or a subset of the 96 permutations of the diagnosis to suit their goals and agenda …
Nothing about any of it is objective … An Autistic person is a person who has the Neurotype that Autistic People have … That sounds like circular logic because it is … Autsim is defined by the people who are identified as being Autistic. (We don’t have a tag on our body that says “Autism”)
Ah just I know some allistics act in bad faith and make pronouncements without consulting the community
If you do genetic testing on a large group of Autistic people you will find that we share lot of the same genes and a *few* of us don’t. And that is collections of genes related to Autism is called the broad Autism phenotype.
I think we're still sorting out what that ought to be, in real-time. We can give days long lectures on it. Imagine asking someone to define what it is to be Trans in the 1970's. We can attempt, but can we really accomplish it concisely? I don't think so. Autism neither IMHO, but that's just me.
