I’m on the fence about AI, but I’m honestly curious about what element was stolen here. If you’re the original artist of the JD portrait, kudos to you, it’s hilarious. JD and The Shining are popular data points in the memesphere. Also, if there’s a better description than memsphere, let me know.

If it was a still image that was 'shopped it could still fall under "Fair Use," but AI databases are only able to (attempt to) mimic things like movement, perspective, shifting angles, etc. through their massive datasets which are foundationally built on scraped and stolen data, often copyrighted.

The portrait you see in the AI generated reel isn't a single portrait, it's made using as many images of him as exist online that have been stolen from photographers who are professional and copyright their photos. News agencies often pay to use photos, this AI stole them to create a meshed image.

Right. But, All the images I’ve seen of this caricature have been paintings or illustrations, not actual photos. I was wondering if you were the original artist.

If I went through the trouble of animating this myself by hand, would I get the same amount of criticism? It’d be the same principle. I’d be referencing other people’s work.

I can see how using a “middle man” like AI instead of constructing something oneself would come across as lazy and offensive to creators.

This is probably why I don’t like using AI. I’ll do mashups, reference other artists or styles, but I would be doing it with my own hands and thoughts. That’s probably more respected these days.

Generative AI displaces labour, contributes to environmental degradation and works against the very basis of plurality. If you want to resist fascism you'd heed the warnings articulated by Critical theorists who escaped Nazi Germany. Don't fucking outsource your political satire. Create with intent.

Yes. Ultimately, this is the strongest point.

With AI being the Middleman it's less about being creative, which can be subjective, and more about the Middleman's tactics of using immense amounts of stolen data to construct their datasets. AI wouldn't be half as functional without stolen property, and that's the main ethical and legal issue.

I could make my own points about creativity but it's all subjective. What's objective truth is the property stolen that becomes used for a dataset, entirely without repayment, consent, or any legal rights to it.

No because it would probably look less shitty, for one thing.
