I teach an entry level Modern Art course most summers. I get comments from students about how academic art history is. What does the general public think art history is if not the serious study of images?

From my experience there are still many who view art history as something akin to what used to be called "art appreciation" - a mostly aesthetic-focused endeavor rather than one concerned with history, ideology, meaning, etc.
Probably because "Art Appreciation" is one of the most popular general ed courses we offer, at least in California. But that's being changed to sound more academic, even.
