Statements like that hide several assumptions. 1) that the rules are fair. 2) that the lenders and the colleges were playing by the rules. Many students are in this situation because they got cheated in a rigged game.

Our ancestors provided electricity, running water, and penicillin so that those ahead would have it better. Paying off those loans is about making the world better for the next generation. It's not a handout. It's a hand up.
