When did every “scary” supernatural being in horror movies have to be so crunchy? Every hand movement, every head turn is always accompanied by so many crunchy tendon/bone sounds. I’ve been present for several real life mummies coming to life and even they weren’t THAT crunchy.

Crunchy > unnatural > scary. Probably triggers a "lizard brain" fear response, it's body horror. Makes sense if it's moving against it's natural range of motion (head spin in The Exorcist), but constant crunchy movement is overdoing it.

It's called "elevated horror," Jhonen. That's where everything that happens on the screen is accompanied by the Minecraft impact sound.

I am crunchy because I have rheumatoid arthritis and I promise you that this does not make me supernatural or scary. The constant shifting of my physical form that defies the laws of space-time makes me supernatural and scary. The RA just makes me cranky.

All those mummies died before they turned 30. Life expectancy for supernatural beings now is much higher. They got bad joints like the rest of us.

The squishy sound effect for the undead soldiers in The Black Cauldron were made by stuffing a latex glove with cooked macaroni and then squeezing the noodles out of it like cake frosting.

You have a good point. Maybe it's the movie industry's way of telling movie goers that this is the part where they should start mindlessly eating their popcorn. It serves to mask the eating noises and fill Big Popcorn's pockets.

...Yo wait you actually have it. See, a lot of those things are no longer physical effects. They're cgi, and as such lack an innate gravity to them. A way to make your mind get around "oh that's fake" is to introduce a physical aspect instead. IE: "that's too fast" "that's not how bodies work" 1/

"OH. Yeah you're right. It isn't how bodies work! So you hear that cronch? That's the demon moving them too fast or not quite right". When you tended to do it for like...Zim. it would be to accentuate the non human nature of it. But when it's all the time, for everything, including when 2/

Creatures shouldn't be that crunchy? It becomes like using the same stab effect a thousand times over. It becomes another example of cheap work or misapplied effects. TL;DR: used to be an easy way to use jank to your advantage. Now it's just poor work. 3/3

I haven't seen any of those movies (the Golem in the silent film of that name which I have seen obviously doesn't count) but perhaps it's an opportunity to use the sound when the being is offscreen but the director wants to plant suspense?
