The home of demokracy or the home of REM and the Indigo Girls?
Get fresh loukoumades for a snack! I wrote about a great place here. I also have some other articles about food & drink, plus my favorite viewpoints in the city everybodyhatesatourist.net/best-loukoum...
Last suggestion-you can get an evening tour of the national observatory and use one of their telescopes to view craters on the moon. History of time measurement. Also a lovely neighborhood. All of our guides have been amazing, deeply knowledgeable women. It’s wonderful here. 💞
We are here now (heading home this morning, sorry to miss you!), and if you can get a private guided tour of the acropolis, it’s absolutely incredible. The new acropolis museum is stunning, has a great café, and don’t miss the Lego replica in the children’s section with many hilarious Easter eggs!
@roxanegay.bsky.social also this: maps.app.goo.gl/6DzHHmHqi744...
Definitely go to the museum first so you know what to look for
We did the opposite! Our tour guide was a former archeologist and such a great storyteller that going to the museum the next day worked well for us.
The cafe in the museum is also very nice.

💯
LOVED this place. Had to come back a second time. 🧿
I can’t go just once in a trip either!
which one. I mean, it already takes me a beat to distinguish Georgias in the news. Now it’s down to the municipal level?
Apply for asylum.
Highly recommend going to a small cafe on a hot day, sitting outdoors, ordering tzatziki and an aperol spritz, and people watching. My husband and I went to Greece for our belated honeymoon last August and this proved to be one of our favorite memories 😎
Stay there would be my advice, this place is hell.
Blue Fish at Vouliagmeni Bay. Stunning waterside setting + glorious seafood. Its just an incredibly fabulous way to spend a few hours.
No recommendations, but do want to wish a wonderful trip!
Tell us what sings, I'm going this summer!
Pack heavy
Be vigilant the men are ruthless and will even try to follow you
I’m not their type
These are great. Thanks!
Just wandering around Plaka and the nearby neighborhoods is great. But a fun little gem is down an alleyway near Ermou - Tranzístor is a café/bar that is a great spot. There are great coffee shops and food and churches and museums just everywhere. Enjoy!! ❤️
Fine Mess is an amazing restaurant
Stay there until January 2029 maybe and enjoy yourself!
Had dinner last summer at SOIL (Michelin starred). Soooo good. Lovely private courtyard. Impeccable service. 16 courses. soilrestaurant.gr
Ooh. Putting that on my list.
16 courses! Wow!
Seconded! Dined there and Delta (also Michelin starred) — co-executive chefs who used Scandinavian techniques (like fermentation) learned at Noma and elsewhere on Greek ingredients. Stunning. deltarestaurant.gr
Retsina, fresh from a cask, is delicious.
Museum of Cycladic Art!!!
The island of Hydra is close to Athens

Taramosalata, nom
Any taverna in Exarchia honestly!
The Greek white wine for 2€ in the gas station near the acropolis is a very pleasant thing.
Which Athens? If it's the one in the State of Georgia I have loads. If it's the one in Greece you're on your own.
Grab some cat treats to walk around with. There are cats everywhere.
Be mindful of recent flooding.

My wife and friends and I visited in Jan 2023, so it was still Greek Orthodox Xmas and the street lights were DAZZLING! Every cafe looked like a stage set. It felt more exciting than Paris. We realized we assumed they’d still be suffering “Grexit-era”‘austerity and the joyful mess was incredible. /1
2/ Every archeological museum is stunning. Kids on school field trips sitting on floor, learning abt ancient culture. So, Acropolis Museum & National Museum of Archeology where WE SAW Schliemann’s GOLD MASK of AGAMEMNON!! Y’know, big history stuff remembered first seen on covers of Life Magazine.
3/ Acropolis, yes, but visit when the sun comes up before tourists arrive. Top of the hill. Gates open later, say hello to all the feral cats. Bring treats. Also, museum across the street has a stunning view of site from their top floor. Beautiful, eerie. Museum has a fab cafe, to boot.
4/ At night, on any street, look up at the Acropolis. It’s lit up with lighting donated by Ari Onassis’ family donations, so that’s one good thing he did, I guess. The National Gardens of Athens (right there, downtown, walkable) was calm, green, and beautiful.
5/ Gardens are near big downtown square: Syntagma Square. So many small shops selling real things. Hats! Brooms! Cakes! Not just tourist junk. Next, Athens has a complex of museums under the umbrella of the “Benaki Museum.” We loved the Benaki Toy Museum and the Islamic Art Museum. www.benaki.org
6/ We were surprised and delighted by Athens. They even have a Roman Forum with ancient buildings we spotted from a hilltop—fantastic to explore. So many layers. Have a wonderful trip and hope it fills your spirits deeply. Cue up Joni Mitchell’s song “Carey” and look for your own Mermaid Cafe. /end
The Chapel of St. George, located at the top of Lycabettus Hill. It's the highest point in Athens and has the most incredible views.
BeQueer is the best drag bar in the country.
Safe travels, I hope you have a wonderful trip
Having a glass of wine at Prasini Tenta, Lykavitos
I have a weird one. Try the Chinese food there. It was the best I've had, and now my family has a tradition of trying Chinese restaurants all over the world.
some of the best Indian restaurants are in London
True. Ironically, I had the worst Indian food of my life in Athens. Full circle.
I do this, too! It's fascinating to see how Chinese food is adapted to the local preferences.
Best chinese food I ever had was in ....Dublin. I know. I know. But really.
We haven't been to Ireland yet. I can't wait to try it!
I’m in Ireland right now and the actual citizens of Dublin are telling me don’t bother with the Chinese food
The most beautiful place I've ever seen
Oh I likely wouldn't recommend it. This was special: it was many years ago and it was this bizarre illegal restaurant in a four story house and the people I was with spoke Mandarin and knew the restaurateurs. Best food I've ever had - on a folding table in an upstairs bedroom. I'll never forget it.
Yeah, go to an island instead.
I have been to many of the islands. And I am obviously going to Athens because I said that. This mind of comment is so unhelpful.
📌
buy incense in an Orthodox church, check out Exarcheia, Byzantine Museum is great.

Cyclades Museum
Athens Georgia? South Kitchen + Bar
Seems kinda obvious but the Greek salads are truly amazing. I was blown away!
Make sure to get to the National Archeological Museum. They've got so much. I still think about seeing the Antikythera Device there years ago.
I want to see that so much!
Sounds like Weaver Ds is worth a visit. www.npr.org/2025/04/03/n...
Athens, GA or Athens, Greece?
Athens, OH.
Thank you!
Greece, Georgia,..? Time to alert #ancientbluesky?
This other, other Athens (pronounced with a long A) is actually pretty good if you’re willing to explore a bit. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athens,...
Have a wonderful time in our capitol. The Clumsies is great for cocktails. The vintage stores are filled with treasures. Park yourself in a outdoor cafe with a freddo espresso for hours and people watch. Heteroclitos for wine. Cookoovaya for a special dinner.
Also, pretend that says capital.
Byzantine and Christian Museum!
I'm so jealous. 😏
Go to Sounio at sunset
Sounion! www.google.com/search?gs_ss...
This museum! cycladic.gr/en/
Also, the Women Together exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens. It's a 3 part exhibition and part 2 went up last month. www.emst.gr/en/home-en/c...
Thanks for this recommendation. I took your advice and went to see it and it was wonderful.
Tzitzikas & Mermigas! My friend from Athens recommended it when I went there in 2022 and it was 5 stars, no notes, absolutely yes.
Weaver DS is amazing and deep REM ties
While loukmades are great, I strongly recommend these cookies if you find a Greek bakery. My grandmother made them and they are pure love: omgfood.com/finikia/
Definitely hit the Plaka and the Parthenon museum. Also, if you want to tour churches, some of them don’t allow bare shoulders or shorts (found that out the hard way). I’m going next month and can’t wait!
If you’re American, seek political asylum
Delphi was wonderful
Keep your valuables safe. Street crime is a real problem. But Athens is amazing.
As long as you avoid the metro near Piraeus, you're fine.
Except at the train station at the airport and near Acropolis. Everyone needs to be careful.
This place was so good we went there twice: feyrouz.gr
We went here and it was tasty! Thanks for the rec to Roxane. 😊
