Amazon’s CEO contributed just 0.4% of his taxable pay to Social Security last year. Meanwhile, Amazon’s median-paid worker contributed 6.2%. Amazon's workers paid a 15x higher rate of their taxable income into Social Security than their CEO. Scrap the cap.

In 2024 Bezos paid at most 6.2% on $81,840 (his Amazon "salary"). So yes, he actually paid about the same as an average worker. Even a minimally honest behavior would have him pay that 6.2% on $168,600 (social security maximum). It would be more honest to pay proper taxes on his billions in income.

I complain about regressive taxes all the time, and I've railed against the Social Security income cap, but I never put the two together like this. Social Security—while not literally a "tax"—is even more regressive than flat taxes or sales taxes!

Easy way to save social security. People do not know that in 2025 the maximum earnings subject social security tax is $176,100. Most of us pay social security tax on every penny we ever earn, but not the top %. If we eliminate this cap and cap benefits paid out, that will save social security.

The billionaire tech-bros are siphoning all the money out of the world economy, where it stagnates because they have nothing they need to do with it. Governments are going to have to start printing money just to replace the cash they’ve taken out of circulation and stuffed under their beds.

It's way past time to remove the artificial income cap on the FICA tax.

Oh yes! Lived in SF in the early 90s with my teenage daughter. City Lights is what convinced her that moving from Ann Arbor to SF was a good idea

This is somewhat misleading as the Social Security tax has a cap of earnings. This year it is around $176k. Thus the effective tax rate for a person making more than this amount is less than the 6.2% tax rate. This model has worked for years. Focus on Income Tax Equality.

How is that deceptive? They literally are arguing to eliminate the cap

If the cap is eliminated and the tax rate is a flat rate like it is now then all pay the same on W2 wages. Problem is most rich folks don’t get all their income via taxable wages.

Yeah, other types of taxes are needed to #TaxTheRich effectively, but eliminating the cap for Social Security would certainly help the long-term solvency of that program
