My wife thinks she looks after our houseplants adequately and tells me not to water them. I don't think she waters them enough and that's why they look unhealthy or die. So I started watering them extra in secret, and they look so much better, it's amazing.

Two lemon pips, planted same day. Cared for by different people. Left started well, but was over-watered. All the leaves fell off. After being adopted, and watered just right, a new leaf is growing. Over-watering is just as bad as under-watering. Water 'just right for that plant' and it will thrive.
Those plants will likely die of root rot before too long
If they aren't being watered enough in the first place, watering them a little more isn't going to cause root rot
I look after plants for a living. Indoor plants need a lot less water than people think

Why do you assume the poster is a he? Also, I didn't assume, I said "if" the plants aren't being watered enough. I don't know if they are, but watering them a little more doesn't guarantee them getting root rot.

I get that, but from my experience people overwater their plants. There can be short term gain but long term the plants can suffer from overwatering.
Obviously. But you will admit that the correct amount of water is more than "not enough", right?
Likewise, the correct amount of water is less than too much. It's easier to revive underwatered than overwatered plants

My wife loves plants. I only hate the monstera. A few years ago, for staying at in-laws at summer I got her a grow kit from Pimoroni. Theory: 4 weeks monitoring correct moisture levels, save, maintain. 3 zones, sensors, water pumps, phone alerts great bit of kit. It's still unused. Bit gutted. If it
was used it could've altered her to the root rot but she didn't give up and saved it! To be fair though almost all of them have lived over those years which given the variation of varieties is impressive. She's done really well. Unfortunate that bloody monstera is one of them.
