This is a good question. For me my playlist consists of 299 songs or types of music, some with lyrics and some not. I really update the list but it covers all what I'm feeling. Why 299.. I actually don't know.
299 is a good number. It feels right. Your post has prompted me to pay closer attention to what’s going on with me when I turn to music. Thx! Also, do you have a number of “always on the list , no matter what” songs and then a number of “optional in the rotation of updates”? Or how do you choose?
