The Republicans have been able to impede Dems when Dems were in the majority before. The reverse is also possible, should the Dems decide to be more concerned with fighting Republicans instead of fighting their own base.

Half the time the Republicans don't need filibusters because they can count on a handful of "moderate" Dems to back their side. The Democratic Party only ever seems to have principles and discipline when it comes to blocking any movement to the left.

Dems won't turn on the right-wing members of their own party. Dems won't go after Republicans in the court over corruption. They don't want to take that route because it would mean they risk losing highly valuable corporate donors. That's why they go after the left instead.
