I think the point here is not the objects themselves – it's about replacing something like for like without asking your partner whether or not it's time for a change or an upgrade. My guess here is that 'the wife' in the OP's situation makes most use of the chopping board. See the analogy now?

Thanks, right. People often look forward to replacing a failing thing with a _better_ thing. And having someone replace it with the same thing deprives them of the better thing they wanted. Or, the fact the first one was failing means perhaps it's not a good model in the first place.
