Partly, I expect, because under the US system there isn’t the equivalent of a party leader (=presidential candidate) agreed in advance, to herd the cats.

There is the Democratic National Committee. There are current Congressional party leaders, none of which has risen to the moment for more than a few hours. They are simply unequipped.
