post from my facebook, sharing my exciting 3am mini-adventure

All my cats are indoors-only for various reasons. My bedroom is on the second floor of the house. I have a balcony. When it's been raining, I'll leave the door open but the screen closed so I can enjoy the smell of wet sagebrush. It's cool to hear owls. We have some living quite nearby. One cat lives exclusively in my bedroom (Bloody Mary) and her son also often lives in here with us (George Orwell). So anyway, it rained yesterday and the sunset was gorgeous. Spouse and I were out taking pictures on the balcony. Later, I opened the door to enjoy the breeze, and then I went to sleep in a cuddle puddle with Mary and Orwell. I woke up at 3am to my standing fan squealing, which is weird, because it usually doesn't. I got up to turn it off. Went to shut the balcony door. And then realized that the screen door had been OPEN ALL NIGHT, meaning Mary and Orwell could leave. The witching hour is a terrible time for that much adrenaline! If anyone on the street was awake and looking, they would have been treated to me flying out onto the balcony Winnie the Pooh style, zero pants or undies, bush akimbo, in a panic to find my cats. Orwell was on the edge of the balcony, crouched like a gargoyle. He looked psychologically damaged by the sight of Mom running at him half-naked and darted inside the bedroom. Luckily Mary was still sleeping with me, so Orwell was the only one who spent a few (?) hours (?) where the owls could eat him. Obviously there's no point getting worked up about something that didn't happen, so I just deep-breathed in bed until I could fall asleep again. (Orwell celebrated being trapped inside by getting the zoomies and repeatedly stomping on my head.) But you know what's weirdest about this? I only woke up because the fan was squealing. After bringing Orwell inside, I turned the fan on again, and it wasn't squealing at all. It's like the standing fan was looking out for him. Anyway, sleep wearing shorts. That's the moral of this story.

I just finished reading this to mum and (she loves this line also) but she's been in similar situations and knows the power of the universe to avert disaster where it is able. 🫂

Yes, wear some kind of pants lol 😆 And I'm very glad it was just a fright and not a disaster. 🫂💜

I had a similar episode, but I was already up and eating breakfast with the sliding glass door open and the screen shut. Stray cat approached the screen, and my tuxie boy went nuts and banged the screen down and ran out. I followed in my PJs, heart racing, and spotted them in the yard next door. 1/?

It was still dark outside, the grass wet. I rushed back for a stepstool to help climb over the 4' picket fence, and once in the neighbor's yard I didn't see or hear either cat. All I could think of was my kitty had chased the stray up onto the highway and beyond. Maybe hurt or dead. 2/

Then I heart my kitty prowling & growling. I grabbed him, he fought me but not too hard. Somehow I got us both back over the fence with no stepstool on that side to help. Back inside, I dried him off and examined him for injuries but found none. I swear it took HOURS for my heart to slow down. END

He was good at it, and you'd think I'd have learned but no. A yr later, in a different house, he banged the screen down to get to a bird on the patio (which easily flew away). This time, he saw where he was, and froze until I could step out and rescue him. Door stayed closed after that.

He was a rascal, but very sweet and loving. He went OTRB in 2009, and I still miss him every day.
