I think I’m going to train for a marathon swim (10k) next summer, which might also solve my IT band problem bc I will be running, like, one time a week. 😅

Which swim are you planning on doing?
(I ask because I help organize one of the marathon swims in Vancouver, Around the Bay, so I was wondering if you might be doing that one!)
Oh cool!! Around the Bay is my goal for two years’ time. I’d love to do the 6k VOWSA option for that other swim y’all do next year (to hopefully get a qualifying time for AtB). My plan is to do a 10km lake swim around here next summer.
Ah, the 6K at the Kits Challenge? Excellent. Unless it happens to fall on a weekend when I am out of town, I will probably be the emcee for that race. (And maybe swim the 1.5k distance.)
I was the prez of VOWSA for 2023-2024. I'm now in a 'past president' role on the board where I mostly do community relations stuff. (I like to talk to the people who are new to the sport and encourage them!) But I'm almost always helping at the races.
When the time comes around, if you need a support kayaker for AtB, let me know. I usually volunteer for that.
Ah cool!!! Yes, the challenge one :). Exciting!! (I think we’ve talked before about my pace being just that bit off the qualifying pace for AtB. Hoping to close the gap with some focused training leading up to next summer :))
Oh yes, now that you mention it, I do remember. AtB also had a relay option this year that we didn't add until June or so. (And you could choose to do 2 legs of the relay, if you wanted.) Leg 1: Locarno to Kits 3.7km Leg 2: Kits to English Bay 1.6km Leg 3: English Bay to Locarno 4.7km
Oooo that’s a fun option. Maybe I could try a leg out next year with the idea of doing the full triangle the following year :)
Gawd IT band syndrome is the worst… took months to heal. SI joint disfunction is no fun either.. 14 months. The life of a runner
It’s so annoying!! Especially since I really only run three times a week, two 4ks & one 5k. One of my legs is an inch longer than the other though, and so… here we are.
That’ll create the friction for sure, and there’s only one stretch for an IT band
