You may not need religion in a general sense but reality is that children of Orthodox members of any religion are taught to dislike anyone of a different faith from an early age. The argument is that religion exists. It often leads to war & destruction. 5 Billion worship diff Gods in this world.

Certainly the BE is in part to blame. But remember that the BE along with Spain, Portugal, and France, were all highly religious with monarchies that were supposedly divined by Heaven. There is no BE without religion. There is no Spanish Conquest without religion. They were basic theocracies.
