The crusades? The inquisitions? Colonialism? Slavery? Witch burnings? KKK? Or do you mean the Nazis? It’s just what they do. Our founders tried to stop it. But we have this weird “respect” for beliefs no matter how batshit and deadly. They failed. We didn’t learn so are next.

When I enlisted a long time ago, I was asked to fill out form for information for my dog tags. I answered "Pagan" for religious preference. The dog tags came back "No Preference." I did prefer Pagans, but the Army thought otherwise.
I'll do you one better. When I was in flight school I wanted to get new dog tags so I went directly to the agency responsible and filled the form out. I wrote atheist on the form. Previously they said "no religious preference". Handed the form to the lady and the first thing she looked at /1
was my response to the religion question. She said, "atheist is not a valid response for that question." I said, "sure it is, I'm an atheist. Any other response to that question would be inherently dishonest." She then literally said, "oh come on, there are no atheists in foxholes." I said, "well /2
there was at least one in my own proverbial foxhole when I was serving in the war: myself." She wanted to continue to argue that I was not in fact an atheist who happened to also have been in a war while maintaining my atheism. So I asked," A friend of mine just got his tags back and has 'Jedi /3
Knight' written where his religious preference should be listed. Jedi don't exist. It's not a religion yet he got no push back at all about it." She said, "that would also be an invalid response." I said, I know, but the point is that they didn't hastle him or even question him and yet, here I am /4
being hastled for being honest with myself and others, why is that?" She said, "they'll come back with 'no religious preference' then." Then she did the whole, "NEXT!" nonsense even though it was just her and I in the office. Any way, I lost my career, profession, identity and retirement as a /5
result of me asking for help with my drinking and the treatment team's and my command team's response being orders for me to complete a 12 step program as an atheist even though faith is a required component of all 12 step programs. I ultimately failed the 12 step program and lost everything. /6
Having my civil rights infringed by an organization whose Oath of Office/Enlistment contains the verbiage to support and defend those rights, rather than deprive them like in my case, has really ruined my faith and confidence in nearly every institution in our society. It sucks. I just needed /7
help getting back on my feet again after the sudden tragic loss of my brother and my combat PTSD resurfacing as a result of that grief. But, I guess atheists like me just don't get to have our rights too. /END
So I guess my point to my own personal story is that MRFF is an incredibly important organization that does its best to stop discrimination, like my own story, from happening. I was active duty from '91-'95. Once the evangelicals found out I'm an atheist, I was both mildly bullied ("enjoy Hell, demon") and proselytized to. Some of it I brought on myself, to be fair. I was pretty militant back then. But it is nice to see that there's support for us now.

My ex was national guard in the early 2000s and he had fundie chaplain telling him how he needed to be the head of his household and control me as his wife. Apparently he was pushing that shit pretty hard on every young person around him

I was raised Christian, but during my many years in the military none of my friends or I ever talked about religion. Most of us didn’t attend services. As I went up through the ranks, I began to feel uncomfortable for the non Christians that I served with.
Apparently the US Air Force is just about completely taken over by the Christo-fascists!
I hope that there are enough people left that believe in our Constitution.
I personally do not believe that religion has any place in determining government policy. We all have different beliefs. I always appreciated our Chaplains and all that I knew served every faith and belief selflessly.
