You made my point. East German historical documents are rife with examples how they emulated Gestapo tactics. The Stasi were more feared, and considered more brutal than any of the other Soviet-bloc secret police apparatus. Present-day ICE is on an identical footing.
There were some idealists among their ranks, and people who genuinely feared the western world, but in the end most of them were Stalinists and authoritarians to the core.
