Ok. Trivia. Let's talk about this guy: Beaky Buzzard. You may remember him from the old Warner Brothers cartoons. Canonically, Beaky is a turkey vulture. Phil will love this: In the US and Canada, vultures are colloquially called "buzzards"... 1/7
But buzzards are a completely different group of birds of the Accipitridae family, which includes hawks, eagles, and Old World vultures (among other raptors). Here's the Common Buzzard. New World vultures belong to family Cathartidae, which includes condors. 2/7
New World and Old World vultures are not closely related and are an example of convergent evolution. Here's the white backed vulture (Africa) and the black vulture (North America). These birds are not closely related. 3/7
Back to Beaky Buzzard, who is supposedly a turkey vulture. Here is Beaky again with a turkey vulture for comparison. Pink head and neck... check, but what about that white collar? the white collar on a vulture is common cartoon motif, if inaccurate. 4/7
The only bird that has that white feather collar is the Andean condor. It's in the New World vulture family. Now to the California condor, which is super interesting. 5/7
The California condor is also a New World vulture. They are critically endangered. There were only 27 individuals in 1987. They were captured and put into a captive breeding program. They were rewilded in 1991 and the 2023 population is estimated at 561 by US Fish & Wildlife. 6/7
All the released birds have wing tags that are readily visible to facilitate sightings reports. The future of the species is promising. 7/end
Good stuff. The best part is that you work out how man posts there will be, before you start. 😯
Except I don't, I go back and fix the numbering.
Ah, of course, you can add posts and still edit them, then post in one go. I'd forgotten about that.
That's very good news, vultures are so important.
The maintenance crew of the bird world
Indeed. In fact I'd like to give a shout out to all the world's wild scavengers
Really impressed with the size of that condor in comparison with its handler 😮
They are huge birds.
Wait until you realise the rabbit is wearing gloves!!😂
He's passing as a priest. Gets invited to deathbeds that way!
He does have that look 😂
Lots of buzzards in Ireland, especially near the motorways. Only time I've seen vultures in the wild was in Crete. Amazing experience to sit and watch them for over an hour while they demolished a goat carcase.
The circling behavior is something cartoons and movies get right. Another thing I forgot to mention: Old World vultures hunt by sight, New World vultures by smell. We get black and turkey vultures along roads in groups too. They are exceedingly smart about avoiding cars.
We don't get them in the UK or Ireland, so to me they're quite exotic things to see. The highlight of our trip to San Diego was seeing a roadrunner in the wild. 😁
Beep beep...ZING! They are funny birds.
